What regular care is required for my artificial eye?
It is important to have the prosthesis professionally cleaned once a year so that it can continue to be worn
comfortably without irritation. Professional cleaning will remove protein deposits which causes the eye to
become dull and lifeless. We also recommend regular daily cleaning by applying a warm compress to the
front of the prosthesis.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How often should I remove my artificial eye?
We recommend that the artificial eye not be removed unless absolutely necessary, i.e. to remove an eye
lash or grit. Actually, frequent removal may cause irritation and increased discharge.
How long will an artificial last?
A prosthetic eye has a life span of four to eight years for an adult and should be evaluated yearly. For
Children a prosthetic eye may last 2-5 years but should be evaluated more frequently to make adjustments
for growth patterns.
What materials are used to make an artificial eye?
Ocular prosthetics are made from plastic polymer.
Can I wear my prosthetic eye while swimming?
Yes, chlorine, or salt water will not harm your prosthetic. Precautions should be taken, however, as an
artificial eye will not float!
What is the difference between a full ocular prosthesis and a scleral shell?
A scleral shell usually covers a blind shrunken globe and is very thin and fragile. A full ocular prosthesis is
normally required when the eye socket has been enucleated and an implant smaller then 20mm is
surgically inserted. The full prosthesis is much thicker and durable.
